Nightguards & TMJ Pain: Working Towards Lasting Change
A nightguard may protect your teeth and provide symptom relief, yet leave you wondering why your jaw remains tense or uncomfortable.
At Cranial Solutions, our objective is to address the structural and functional findings we consider relevant to your complaint. We combine direct jaw treatment, targeted muscle techniques and, where appropriate, NasalRx, with the aim of achieving lasting improvements rather than relying on symptom management alone.
For patients who improve substantially, reducing dependence on a nightguard may become a welcome possibility. Before stopping a prescribed guard, however, its role in protecting your teeth should be reviewed with your dentist.
Why can jaw pain persist despite a nightguard?
A guard can separate and protect the teeth while clenching or grinding continues. It may therefore serve a useful purpose without fully resolving the discomfort that brought you to treatment.
We want to understand what has changed since you started wearing it. Has morning soreness improved? Does your jaw still feel tight during the day? Are chewing, opening or yawning uncomfortable?
These details help us identify what still needs attention. At Cranial Solutions, we assess joint movement, muscle tenderness and the wider cranial and facial findings that guide our treatment approach. Continued pain is a reason to reassess the picture, rather than simply accept ongoing discomfort.
Treatment aimed at changing how your jaw feels and functions
Our findings guide hands-on treatment for restricted movement and persistent tension. This may include jaw mobilisation or manipulation, targeted work on the chewing muscles and gentle intraoral techniques.
Where we identify relevant cranial and facial restrictions within our clinical approach, we may recommend the six-treatment NasalRx protocol. Our objective is substantial improvement in comfortable, coordinated jaw function.
We review whether your jaw settles more comfortably at rest, chewing becomes easier and morning soreness reduces. In our clinical experience, many longstanding TMD patients achieve changes that extend beyond the temporary relief they previously experienced.
Could I eventually stop wearing my guard?
That may become possible, depending on why it was prescribed and whether tooth protection remains necessary. Improved comfort is encouraging, but does not by itself confirm that sleep grinding has stopped. Reviewing this with your dentist helps determine whether the guard still has a useful role.
