TMJ, Headaches & Neck Pain: Understanding the Connections
Jaw pain rarely tells the whole story for many people we see. Alongside longstanding TMD, you may experience recurring headaches or migraines, neck tension, dizziness, nasal congestion or persistent sinus discomfort.
At Cranial Solutions, we assess these symptoms together. We examine jaw movement, surrounding muscles, cranial and facial relationships, and relevant neck findings to understand how they may connect within your individual presentation.
In our clinical experience, many patients report substantial improvements across several of these symptoms as they progress through the six-treatment NasalRx protocol. Treatment may bring changes beyond the jaw complaint that first prompted them to seek care.
These observations are central to our approach. They guide us to consider the wider symptom pattern and review your progress across jaw comfort, headaches, nasal breathing and other concerns, rather than judging improvement through jaw movement alone.
Our aim is to resolve your symptoms wherever possible and achieve lasting improvements in comfort and everyday function.
Looking beyond the jaw, treating the wider picture
Your jaw joint brings together the lower jaw and the temporal bone at the side of your skull. Its surrounding muscles and bony connections make the wider cranial and facial arrangement an important part of our assessment and treatment approach.
At Cranial Solutions, we combine direct jaw mobilisation or manipulation, targeted muscle treatment and, where appropriate, the NasalRx inflation protocol. This gives us practical ways to address jaw movement alongside the cranial and facial restrictions identified during assessment.
Working towards substantial change
In our clinical experience, many people with longstanding TMD experience substantial improvements during treatment, including those who have obtained only temporary relief elsewhere. Alongside more comfortable, symmetrical jaw movement, patients frequently report improvements in accompanying headaches, neck tension and other symptoms.
These changes are what we work towards and celebrate with our patients. Throughout the six-treatment NasalRx protocol, where recommended, we review both our clinical findings and the difference you notice in everyday life. Our aim is lasting improvement across the complaints that brought you to us.
Following improvement across your symptoms
When jaw pain, headaches and neck tension have affected you for years, progress means more than a change during an examination. It means eating comfortably, getting through the day with fewer headaches and finding that your neck no longer feels constantly tight.
At the start of care, we establish which symptoms affect you most and how frequently they occur. Throughout treatment, we review these alongside jaw movement and our other clinical findings.
For patients undertaking the six-treatment NasalRx protocol, we also discuss changes in accompanying concerns such as nasal breathing, facial pressure or ear fullness. In our clinical experience, improvements can extend across several complaints, so we give you space to describe the whole picture.
Our goal is substantial, lasting improvement that you can recognise in everyday life.
Frequently asked questions
How can you tell whether my jaw contributes to my headaches?
We ask whether chewing, clenching or jaw movement changes your familiar headache, and examine whether particular movements or muscle pressure reproduce it. We consider these findings alongside your headache history and neck examination. No single finding tells the whole story.
What if neck treatment has only provided temporary relief?
Tell us what improved and how quickly the symptoms returned. We assess your neck alongside jaw function and cranial and facial relationships, looking for relevant contributors that may help explain the recurring pattern.
Our findings guide whether we recommend direct jaw treatment, muscle techniques, NasalRx or a combination suited to your presentation.
